Birth Is The Revolution

Nicole Deggins, CNM, MSN, MPH

Birth is the Revolution™ and if we REVOLT, that is to rise in rebellion against the current status quo to change the way we as a society and community think about conception, motherhood, pregnancy and birth, we can change the vibration of our communities. This is the mantra and philosophy that fuels the passion and the work of Nicole Deggins, CNM, CEO and founder of Sista Midwife Productions, LLC.

Nicole Deggins is one of the county’s leading birth advocacy experts and is a sought after trainer, public speaker and community educator working to eliminate perinatal disparities and bring transparency to prenatal education to help families understand their rights as they navigate the maze of the medical obstetrical system. She provides education, training and consultations for communities, birth workers and organizations that work with child bearing families. She is a dedicated leader, mentor, and consultant and actively supports efforts to increase the numbers of African American midwives, doulas, and birth advocates. She believes that this is a critical step in eliminating the perinatal disparities that plague the African American community.

With over two decades of experience working inside the medical obstetrical system, Nicole’s views and style of training are radically different. Her combination of real life experiences, combined with her vivid storytelling, her willingness to share “insider secrets” and her unprecedented passion, allow her to connect with her students and her speaking audiences in a full and unique way. Nicole uses a powerful delivery style to inspire individuals toward a paradigm shift and she knows helping a family get what they want in birth is not about writing a plan; It’s about understanding the true role they must play in their process in order to make it fulfilling and empowering.

Nicole is the creator of The Birth Plan Myth™ and the Sista Midwife Birth Sister/Doula training. She is a board member of Community Birth Companion in Opelousas, LA and served actively for five years as a part of the leadership team for the International Center for Traditional Childbearing (ICTC). Nicole has provided guest lectures to public health students at Tulane and Xavier Universities and has provided training and consultation to many local and national birth agencies including Healthy Start New Orleans, Birthing Project USA, The Intune Mothering Project, Birth Rite New Orleans, WIC and Birth Mark Doula Collective.

Prior to starting her work with Sista Midwife Productions, Nicole received her BS in Nursing from Georgetown University, and completed a dual degree program at Emory University where she fulfilled the requirements for the MS in Nursing with a concentration in midwifery, and an MPH with a concentration in Health Policy and Management. During her clinical career, Nicole has practiced as a midwife in Washington DC, Mississippi, and Louisiana, and has worked as a labor and delivery nurse in numerous public and private settings throughout the country.
